Stars and Stripes Honor Flight

When the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight leaves General Mitchell International Airport tomorrow morning, two of our photographers will be on it, documenting the trip.

For Courtney Lutz, this will be her third trip documenting this tribute to WWII veterans.  And for John Bryan, it will be his first time photographing their trip to Washington D.C.  For both of them, it is an opportunity to capture a trip that celebrates the service and sacrifice of the people who served.

You can learn more about the Milwaukee Stars and Stripes Honor Flight on their Facebook page.  And you can learn more about the national honor flight organization here.

Charlie Sykes, at 620 WTMJ, has been a driving force behind making these trips known throughout the community.  You can hear his recent interview with the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight President Joe Dean by clicking here.

If you want to support our veterans, the flight is scheduled to return from Washington D.C. on Saturday night about 9:30pm.  Over 2,500 people have attended the previous celebrations to welcome home our veterans.  This is your chance to thank you to them for the service and sacrifices they have made!

Here are some photos of these heroes from the first two trips.  Or click here to view a slideshow from the September 2010 trip.

On the return flight, there is a mail call.  Families write letters of gratitude and thanks.  Mid-way through the trip home, cards and letters are handed out to the soldiers.

And when they get back to General Mitchell, there is a huge crowd of family, friends, and community cheering and celebrating these heroes.
